Methodology

To compile this ranking, we used data from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which collects information on every degree-granting institution in the United States. Specifically, we used NCES’s College Navigator tool to find all institutions that offer online bachelor’s degree programs in journalism.

We then collected data on each program’s tuition rates, both in-state and out-of-state, as well as information on the program’s accreditation status and course offerings. We also researched each institution’s reputation and academic quality to ensure that we were only including programs that meet high standards of excellence.

After collecting and analyzing all of this data, we assigned each program a score based on its tuition rates and other relevant factors. We then ranked the programs from highest to lowest score, with the program with the lowest tuition rate and highest overall quality receiving the top ranking.

About Our Ranking

Our ranking includes a diverse range of online bachelor’s degree programs in journalism, from public institutions to private universities. One trend we found was that many of the most affordable programs were offered by public institutions. This is likely due to the fact that public universities receive funding from the state, which allows them to offer lower tuition rates to in-state students.

We also found that many of the programs on our list were accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). Accreditation by ACEJMC indicates that the program meets high standards of excellence in journalism education, and is recognized by employers in the field.

Finally, we found that many of the programs on our list offer a range of courses in journalism, from traditional print and broadcast journalism to newer fields such as multimedia journalism and data journalism. This ensures that students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for a variety of careers in the field.
